Space War is a retro style arcade game with a twist. You control the flight of the ship and the weapons it uses with only one finger.  You are on a perpetual quest,  flying through the depths of space in an attempt to stay alive as alien objects try to destroy your vessel.

You can download this here on the Market

The goal of the game is to blast as many of the alien objects as possible without being destroyed. Each object provides you with points that are registered at the top right side of the screen. At the start of the game you only encounter straight flying, slow moving asteroids. As you continue to play the game and blast your way forward, the oncoming objects will increase in size and complexity. Eventually you will encounter an alien fleet of space ships, hell bent on destroying your space craft. Your job is to destroy as many objects as possible over the course of the game.

Your chances of survival against this ever more complex enemy sounds insurmountable. However, Space War provides you with the tools necessary for victory. As you destroy the enemy objects you are presented with tokens that you can fly over, to gain special powers. These powers included a lazer cannon, ability to deploy multiple cannon shots at once, a force field and more. One primary rule of Space War is don't get hit by anything coming at you. The game provides you with one life that you must protect. The blue energy meter in the upper left displays your remaining power. Once your power meter is expired, your game is over. This makes avoiding objects just as important as destroying them.

Defeating the enemy forces provided in Space War makes the game a joy to play. The retro style visuals with a well rendered celestial background provides interesting visuals. The only drawback to the game I found, was when my hand at times blocked my view of the screen. Overall, I would say that Space War is a game with enough entertainment value to be worth a try.

Space War was created by Virtual GS and is now available in an edition optimized for the Nexus One.
