After the last movie review I'm pretty sure you would agree that we want to see something worth our time. Up next is "Movies" by Flixster which according to sources, is the #1 Movie Application for Facebook and a behemoth in the mobile industry who's name we won't mention.
You can download it on the Market here.
First impressions, it definitely looks the part. They have paid very close attention to how they present their content and it definitely pays off in the looks category. There is a navigation menu at the top that is pretty straight forward, Box Office, Theaters, Upcoming, DVD and My Movies. Under box office you can find "Opening This Week", "Top Box Office" and "Also In Theaters".
I love the information displayed along side the movie poster, no need to go digging in the menu system to find the relevant information. It displays movie title, the percentage of people on Flixster who liked the film, movie rating and runtime, as well as release date or movie revenue depending on the sub-category. Once inside a movie selection you get a plethora of relevant information including a link to an embedded trailer which displayed very brilliantly on the Nexus One screen, local showtimes, synopsis and much much more. Under the Theaters tab it displays the nearest theaters to your current location categorized by distance from your location. When you select the theater it gives you options to call, get directions through Google Maps or showtimes of movies playing at that specific location. Unfortunately I was not able to find an option for purchasing tickets through the application but if anyone knows otherwise i'd love to hear about it.
The upcoming tab presented a list of upcoming films to hit theaters as far out as 2 years from the current date. The DVD menu is sub-categorized into New Releases, Coming Soon and Browse, this coupled with the next option i'll explain in a moment allows you to really grasp the fullness that this application offers. Under the My Movies you can link your Facebook, Flixster and yes, even your Netflix account to keep a running tab on every movie you've seen as well as movies your friends have seen.
Overall I find this one of the most feature packed movie applications I've ever had the privilege of reviewing. The attention to detail and presentation of content blew my head right off from the start. It would be hard pressed to find much wrong with this appication. The load times were extremely fast, it found my location appropriately, presented the right information on the home screen, looks aesthetically pleasing and has the connectivity needed for even the best social networking guru. |
