For years I have used Skype on my computer to instant message, voice and video chat with friends and family all across the country.  Just this past week Skype released a mobile version of their software to be used with Android phones on the Verizon Wireless network.  The app is free and can be found in the market as of last Thursday.

Download this on the Market here.

The new app has a similar look and feel when compared to the version downloadable for the Mac.  There are three different screens, “contacts”, “events” and “call phones”.  The contacts page is fairly self-explanatory, showing both your online and offline contacts.  The events screen shows a list of currently opened instant message conversations. The phone screen has a simple input window where you place a phone number of your choice.  Just like with the original Skype, you will have to pay for calling actual phones but if you simply want to voice chat with someone on y our contact list it is free.  The app comes with 1.00 Skype credits which can be used to make a real call to a phone.  If you place a phone call either to a Skype contact, a voice chat, or a real phone number, you will see the normal in-call screen your Android phone has.

When looking at the Skype Mobile main page, you can click your options button to bring up several choices. You can change your status, mood, add contacts, edit your profile, add Skype credits or click more.  Clicking more will give you the choice to logoff or even find more settings.  If you click on a contact a popup will give you three choices, either call, send IM or show profile.  Clicking call will then proceed as I mentioned above.  Sending an instant message will move you to the chat screen which works just like text messaging except it’s between Skype screen names.
