The event started with a brief history of Android, beginning with the release of the G1. The speaker then addressed the refined MyTouch model, and the versatility of Android OS across manufacturers and models. Worldwide, 20 Android products have been released by 59 carriers over the last year, driving home Androids emerging dominance.

The speaker talked in detail about the gains made by mobile search in-general and specifically by Android. Mobile search was reported to have increased by 5x in the near period. Android searches 30x over a feature phone.

In a surprise statement, the Nexus One was classified as a "superphone" by the speaker and was reported to be the first in a line of products to come.

Nexus One Specs Solidified:

  • 3.7" 480x800 AMOLED display
  • Android 2.1
  • 1Ghz Snapdragon Processor
  • Featuring a brilliant color display with superb contrast.
  • Trackball that serves as the notification tool, flashing white for email and blue for incoming calls.

It was announced that the Nexus One would be able to render "Live" wallpaper animating the background and providing the user with a richer visual experience.

The Nexus One was designed to leverage 3D framework allowing apps to sit on a scroll wheel and bend as you pass over them. This is accomplished by providing a z-axis perspective when rending graphics.

With the Android OS, search by voice continues to be a highlighted feature. The Nexus One takes this one step further allowing all text in the phone to be voice enabled; so you can send text messages, emails, or tweets by voice! The voice recognition software used by the Nexus One has the ability to learn as time passes, so it will become more accurate over time.

Google Earth has been added as a new feature with the Nexus One release. Google earth will not only render stunning visuals of our planet, but will do so as a voice enabled application.

The Nexus One is now officially on sale. You can buy the Nexus One today at google.com/phone. The Nexus One will cost $179 with T-Mobile contract and will be $529 off contract. You will need a google account to access checkout when purchasing the phone.

It was reported that Verizon will be providing service for the Nexus One starting in the spring of 2010.

Future versions of the Nexus One will enable encrypted apps, to allow app storage on the SD card.
