5 Reasons Why The Nexus One Will Help Google Succeed

With the recent unveiling of the new "Superphone", Google has positioned themselves for success in a number of fronts. What's going to lead the way? The Nexus One of course. Though there's still much to be known about Google's broader plans, this much is evident. Google is in the business of revolutionizing industries.

1. There's no doubt that Google generates massive amounts of money through ad revenue and thanks to the recent discussion regarding the acquisition of AdMob, they could have a huge foot in the door of mobile advertising. How does the Nexus One play a part? It generates broader interest for the Android platform as a legitimate player in the App Race. The key is quality, not quantity. Google knows this and is aggressively courting devs to pump the Android Market full of high quality apps. In addition to apps, there are plans to release Abobe Flash 10.1 which will mean that conventional ads will now be viewable on the mobile browser, something that until now was only capable on select number of phones (ie HTC Hero) with a specific flash configuration. If Google can control the mobile ecosystem as they've done on the search front, they will succeed.

2. Google has been a huge supporter of cloud computing. Ten years from today, no one is going to be syncing their phone through a USB cable and Google has taken that into account as they usher us into this new era of mobile technology. From the moment you turn on your Nexus One (and most Android phones) you're prompted to enter your Google mail account information. Your Google contacts, Google checkout, Google Calendar, Google Docs........ are immediately synced with your device creating a true mobile sync. The Nexus One is closely configured with voice recognition to accomplish real time searches whether through Google Maps or Google Earth, how is this accomplished? Through the cloud, which means that though the experience might have some bugs, it will only get better as Google analyzes data and updates the software accordingly. Another advantage to having a profile in the cloud is that if you ever find yourself in need of hard resetting or replacing your phone, all of your apps are immediately accessible again without having to walk over to a PC and attaching a cord to your phone (as you do with the iPhone). Cloud computing is the future and Nexus One promoting the cloud is another reason why Google will succeed. (I'm writing this using Google docs, very convenient)

3. Out of all the leaks prior to the Nexus One release, one that failed to be accurately reported on was that it would NOT be a Google branded phone (phone is HTC branded). In fact it is a prime example of what the Open Handset Alliance set out to do by collectively combining efforts to progress the Android platform. Not only did Google explicitly mention HTC's involvement in designing and manufacturing of the phone, but in doing so it crushed any belief that Google would undermine the handset manufacturing community by becoming a competitor. People were also speculating that Google would implement VoIP (which is still a possibility) and ruin its partnership with phone carriers, but as of now they will remain rumors. The Nexus One embodies community and openness both in Software and Hardware development which I believe is the correct way of encouraging others to innovate. Google will succeed because it has chosen to adopt a "Don't be evil" mentality and included as many people as possible instead of forcing its influence, which might work for a season but will come back to hurt in the long run (Apple is seeing this with its App Store)

4. Google is constantly innovating by going above and beyond what is expected of them. You want search? How about real time relevant search.....You want directions? How about view augmented reality....... You want email? How about real time collaboration with colleagues.... You want voice recognition? How about voice input in all text fields....... You want access to your information from anywhere? How about the "cloud"... and a browser and operating system to go along with it, the list goes on and on. So why should the Nexus One be any different. Enough with the "iPhone killer" horseplay, any smart tech junky will admit that the iPhone is here to stay unless Apple devides to go down the deep end. So what's the strategy? Apple has thrived on keeping the competition in the dust and behind closed doors. But what many have failed to notice is if anyone has seen more success in the last decade, its been Google hands down. Google had a choice to make when they decided to make that initial phone call to HTC, were they going to skimp out on the hardware and hope the Google brand name and software would be enough to convince prospective consumers? With a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, dual mic setup for noise cancellation, 5MP camera with built in flash, 3.7 in AMOLED display, support for WiFi 802.11 n there is no doubt that this phone is now King. In addition to having cutting edge technology, it can be purchased unlocked to give consumers a broader choice of carrier network. Google didn't simply endorse a phone, they wanted to shift a paradigm of how the US consumer purchases their device. Unlike the famed iPhone, you can choose wireless service through T-Mobile, AT&T and soon Verizon will join these ranks. The Nexus One continues Google's reputation of leading the pack and that why they will succeed.

5. My last and final point as to why I see the Nexus One helping Google succeed is simple, they know us sometimes better than we know ourselves. It's no coincidence that in one years time after entering the mobile OS industry they were able to take down the behemoth in the world of computing known as Microsoft and its Windows Mobile platform. They have tremendous amounts of knowledge about their consumer base and billions of dollars to back it up. Rest assured, every move you see Google make concerning Nexus One or Android OS is carefully planned and executed. It wasn't a coincidence we had the huge amounts of leaks that we did. In comparison with other product releases we sometimes have been in the complete dark until 2 days before its release, much like Google Goggles. Google has perfected the game of industry chess while its competitors are still wondering how they got into check mate. Consider the Nexus One an interactive move on Google's behalf and this is why they will ultimately succeed.
